Education and Access
You want to select a firm or advisor that has access to the most competitive carriers in the marketplace. Quality advisors will educate you on the features in a disability contract and then explain the key differences between carriers. You should consider going through this process before looking at quotes to help in making an educated decision.
Experience and Client Retention
The life of a physician in residency/fellowship and really throughout their career requires an advisor that is flexible. Scheduling/Rescheduling and adapting to their unpredictable schedules is paramount to helping physicians. They often require meetings or calls at early hours in the morning or late hours in the evening and weekend. How does the advisor or firm make themselves user friendly based on their schedules? Additionally, how long have they been working with physicians and how does what is their focus? Do they focus on a transaction or long term client retention? If long term client retention do they have the clients that are not only in training but heads of medical practices, chairman's of departments as well that can speak about this long term retention?
Geography and Bandwidth

Service and Support
You want to select a firm or advisor that can service this policy not only during training but throughout your carrier. You need to ask and understand the service department (if any) that the firm has to support your policy. You will get notifications in the mail from the carrier, you will change addresses, and you will change employers. What type of quality control measures does the advisor or firm have to meet your policies needs in the future? Succession and Future Vision
Unfortunately less than 10% of those that enter the insurance industry remain in the business after 3 years. Additionally, what happens to your policy if your advisor gets sick or hurt or dies in the future?
